Maharajas' Express FAQ's

What is Maharajas' Express? Who owns it ?

Maharajas' Express is the latest addition to the fleet of luxury trains in India. It is the only luxury train which takes the guests on a pan-Indian journey. It took its maiden voyage in October 2010.

The train is owned by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) - a Public Sector Enterprise under Ministry of Railways, India.

What are services that are included in the tariff ?

The tariff of the Maharajas' Express includes cost of travel, accommodation, all meals, water, beverages, house brands of wines, beer and spirits, and sightseeing at the destinations. The tariff also includes entrance fees of monuments, guides, tour managers, still camera fees, and all leisure activities.

The tariff however does not include laundry, telephone calls, gratuities, liquors and alcoholic beverages (apart from house brands of wines, beer and spirits). Video, films and professional still camera fees are also excluded from the tariff.

Can I smoke onboard the train ?

As per Indian law, smoking is prohibited inside the train as well as other public places.

What is the dress code onboard the train ?

Smart casuals for the day, clothes with subdued colors for jungle safari and formal attire for the dinner to suit the occasion and as a consideration for fellow travelers is expected. Since the itinerary involves walking excursions off train, it is recommended that you carry walking shoes with you.

Can I buy gifts onboard Maharajas' Express ?

Yes, Maharajas' Express has a high-end boutique carriage where you can buy gifts and intimate mementos to cherish your unforgettable journey.

How long does the journey take ?

Maharajas' Express India offers a total of 4 pre-packaged, all-inclusive itineraries. Three of them are pan-Indian itineraries spanning over 6 nights/7 days and the other itinerary is golden triangle tours spanning over 3 nights/4 days.

Are guides available for Journey ?

On all excursions off-train, you will be accompanied by professional guides with in depth knowledge of the locality. Foreign language speaking guides can also be arranged at additional cost on prior request at the time of booking by the guests.

Which language is used aboard the train ?

All crew members are well versed in English language.

What is the mode of payment ?

All major credit cards are accepted onboard the Maharajas' Express.

Do I have to pay for lunch?

No, your booking amount includes the cost of lunch as well as house brands of alcoholic drinks. But you will have to pay for the wines and spirits served at the bar. You can also avail of A la Carte meals and snacks.

Are Children Welcome ?

Yes, children are allowed on-board Maharajas’ Express.

How much luggage can I bring?

We request that the guests should carry baggage as per the standards that are set by the international airlines. Because of limited storage space, it is recommended that you should carry soft topped luggage.

How soon should the booking be made ?

It is always better that you do the booking as early as possible to avoid any last minute disappointment, considering the popularity of the train. It is advisable that you make the bookings 3-4 months prior to the journey.

What is the capacity of the train ?

The train has 23 coaches that can accommodate 88 guests in total. The cabins of the train have been segregated into Deluxe Cabins (20), Junior Suites (18), Suites (4) and Presidential Suite (1).

Spacious in size, each cabin is well-equipped with every world-class facility such as WI-Fi, telephone with ISD, attached bathrooms and much more. The train also has a lounge, a bar and 2 restaurant.

Is laundry service available on train ?

Laundry service is not included in the train fare. However, it is available in limitation at select destinations. It is advisable that you contact your carriage butler for more details.

What currency do I need for any Off-Board travel? Is USD suffice ?

For off-board travel it is advisable you carry INRs in varying denominations (5,10, 20, 50, 100, 500). Currency exchange counters are quite a few and reasonably located. A few proprietors may even accept payment in USD.

Can disabled people travel on Maharajas' Express ?

The dimensions of the train and its passages do not make it suitable for passengers who are wheelchair-bound. However, passengers with slight walking difficulties can be accommodated.

But it is recommended that an able-bodied person should accompany such a passenger. In case of any special requirement, information should be given at the time of booking.

How is the temperature controlled on the train ?

Maharajas' Express is centrally air-conditioned. However, every cabin has an individual temperature controlling device with which you can adjust the temperature as per your preference.

Is there a TV on the train ?

Yes, every cabin has an LCD TV.

Does the train offer adequate safety of my belongings and myself ?

Maharajas' Express is one of the finest and most well-known luxury trains of India that offers a traveling experience that is as safe as it is luxurious. Each cabin has an electronic safe. There are live television, CCTVs in all the public areas and electronic smoke detection systems too.

You will have a comfortable ride because of Pneumatic Suspension System. Hygiene levels are maintained and there is a water filtration plant also. The services of a paramedic are available on the train round the clock and air ambulance service is available too.

Can I take my pet on the train ?

There are no facilities for pets on the train.

Will I need insurance for my trip ?

It is advisable that every guest should take travel insurance before he makes a booking for any Journeys on the Maharajas' Express. However, for your safety the train is insured for situations like terrorism, fire, theft and earthquake. Thus, every guest is covered under an umbrella insurance cover.

Can you arrange my flights ?

If you want we can make arrangements for your flight but its fare will be extra and not included in the fare of the train journey.

What if I want to go for a special excursion, which is not the part of the itinerary ?

An additional supplement will be levied on certain departures which offer special interest excursions, signature events and special guest lecturers.

What if I want to book pre and post trip to other tourist destinations in India ?

I am a diabetic. Will I get a diabetic diet on the train?

Yes, you would if you inform us at the time of booking the train. Every effort will be made to accommodate all culinary requests; however, we are unable to provide meals requiring strict religious observance in the preparation.

Do I need any special vaccination before coming to India ?

No specific vaccinations are required for travel to India; however, you are advised to check for advisories on the Govt. of India website. Foreign tourists should be in possession of a Yellow Fever Vaccination certificate conforming to international health regulations, if they are originating or travelling through Yellow Fever endemic countries. Anti-malaria precautions should be taken.

It is also recommended that you consult your physician for any personal health advice based on your travel itinerary. If you are taking prescription medication, it is advisable to carry enough supplies to last for the duration of your trip. It is also advisable to carry sufficient insect repellent.

What if I fall sick during the journey ?

We have a paramedic on board the train that can provide emergency medical facilitation if required.

Is there internet connectivity onboard ?

High speed Internet access that is made available on board. You need to contact the train manager for further details.

What kinds of cuisines are available on board ?

All Indian, continental and oriental cuisines are available onboard, but the signature traditional dishes from Indian kitchen steal the limelight.
